A Letter to KS Governor Sebelius Re. Infrastructure

The Wichita Eagle
November 26, 2008

Dear Governor Sebelius:

We are dismayed to hear about KDOT’s suspension of construction lettings due to state and federal funding uncertainties. As you are aware, enhancing U.S. infrastructure is a key priority and an excellent stimulus for the economy in the short and long term. In order to have the greatest benefit to our children, total network planning is needed.

Over the last 50 years, we have invested over $2 trillion on roads. Annually, we spend $160 billion on infrastructure, yet 60% of our roads are still in “inadequate” condition. And it is estimated that another $100 billion per year is needed to bring the U.S. road network into “good” condition. We have many needs, but limited funds.

We encourage you to keep infrastructure as a top priority—both at the state and national level—by considering these actions:
1. Recycle existing roads in-place
2. Conserve road assets via pavement preservation programs
3. Support “green” processes, products and services
4. Increase funding for solutions that eliminate congestion

Kansas is a great example of these suggestions in action. Over the last 15 years, the state has doubled road improvements and is considered one of the most cost-effective users of taxpayer dollars.

We are a country of possibility. We have put men on the moon, built complex dams and constructed roads that would astound the Romans. All great societies have strong principles, quality education and good roads. Please continue to invest wisely.

Sincerely,

Better U.S. Roads
